The Syrian army has regained control of the strategic town of al-Qaryatayn after fierce clashes with the Islamic State (IS) group, state media reported on Saturday.
The army “liberated” the town from IS militants in a “major operation” that began on Thursday, the state news agency SANA said.
The town is located about 60km east of Homs and is considered a key IS stronghold.
The army’s recapture of al-Qaryatayn comes as the Syrian army and its allies, including the Russian air force, are making advances in the central province of Homs.
The Syrian army has been fighting IS militants since 2013, when the group captured large parts of Syria and Iraq.
